Charges of “intervention against Austrian” independence at the Berlin conference by the Committee on Jewish Claims on Austria and Dr. Nahum Goldmann, its chairman, made by Vienna newspapers this week-end, were sharply denied today.
Vienna newspapers, which published issues mourning Austria’s failure to achieve independence at the hands of the Big Four Foreign Ministers, included belated reports of a press conference given by Dr. Goldmann in New York last Wednesday, in which they quoted him as saying that the committee had intervened with the Berlin conference “against Austrian independence.”
In his statement today, Dr. Goldmann declared: “We never intervened with the Berlin conference nor have we ever considered such intervention. I stated at my recent press conference and included this statement in my release to the press: ‘Not a single Jewish group indicated the slightest opposition to Austria’s demands for full independence. Respect for other people’s sovereignty is an integral part of Jewish tradition.’
“To impute any other statement, act or intent, either to the Committee or to me personally,” Dr. Goldmann declared, “is to misrepresent the truth.”
