Dr. Nahum Goldmann expressed deep “satisfaction” today with the first session of the conference of Jewish organizations here which jointly issued a statement scoring Russians treatment of its Jews, calling for freedom of Jewish emigration in Eastern Europe and Morocco and supporting Israeli peace moves.
“I have reason to be very pleased that after lengthy preliminary discussions with the various organizations it was finally possible to create a basis for bringing them all together into this conference which, although very loose, has established a framework for permanent consultation and coordination between them.
“The unanimity with which the statement was adopted,” Dr. Goldmann continued, “is confirmation of my conviction that it is possible for all these organizations to work together as there are no deep–controversial issues which divide them. This conference represents the majority of the Jewish people outside of Eastern European countries. I am sure that this coming together will be welcomed by Jewish public opinion as an expression of the spirit of unity and cooperation in Jewish life.
“The conference will have to work out its methods of operation, ‘ the World Jewish leader pointed out, ‘as it is not a functioning body aid is based on the rule of unanimity. But I am sure that it will as time goes on become an effective instrument in dealing with world Jewish problems, at the same time leaving full autonomy and freedom of action to its various constituents,” he concluded.
