Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, expressed regret today over the decision of the Central Board of Hungarian Jews to disaffiliate from the World Jewish Congress.
Dr. Goldmann made the statement in a letter to the board in which he added the hope that “the day is not far off when you and other Jewish communities in Eastern Europe will be in a position to renew your cooperation with all Jewish communities in the world through the World Jewish Congress.”
The Hungarian section decided to pull out after three years of cooperation with the world organization. In his letter, sent from Geneva where he is currently staying, Dr. Goldmann denied charges that the World Jewish Congress had “supported reactionary aggressive fascist groups” or that it had “defamed” the Soviet Union. “All we did, ” Dr. Goldmann wrote, “was to ask the Soviet Union to give the Jewish community the same facilities to live as Jews as other national and religious groups have in the USSR and as the Jewish community in Hungary enjoys.”
