Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, today hailed the document holding the Jews blameless for the death of Jesus, which was submitted this weekend to the Ecumenical Council, as an “historic event” which would help remove misunderstanding and hostility that had caused the Jews 2,000 years of suffering.
Dr. Goldmann said that the Jewish people were “moved and gratified by the prospects that the Ecumenical Council may adopt a declaration calling upon the Roman Catholic church to eliminate ‘those religious teachings which give rise to disdain, hatred or persecution of the Jews.’ Such a declaration,” he stated, “would be an historic event not only of fundamental significance for the whole Christian world, but it would also be a measure of vital importance toward the removal of age-old misunderstandings.”
