Memorial services were held here today for Dr. Isidor E. Lichtfeld, Chief Rabbi of Hesse and chairman of the Rabbinical Council of West Germany, who died here at the age of 74.
Rabbi Lichtfeld was born in Austria, educated at Dusseldorf and at Jews College in London, and held a law degree in addition to his rabbinical credentials. During World War I, he served as chaplain for Jewish troops in the Kaiser’s army. Rabbi Lichtfeld was originally anti-Zionist, but became strongly pro-Zionist after World War II.
