Dr. Lawrence H. Pofcher, prominent social and charitable worker and chairman of the Library Board, was elected Alderman-at-large by the slim majority of 73 votes. He is the first Jew to be named to the post. A recount of the ballots was taken after he had been adjudged a loser by 36 votes.
