Dr. H. Pereira Mendes, Minister Emeritus of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, celebrated his 85th birthday today. He received numerous messages of congratulations from many prominent persons, including Governor Lehman, Dr. Cyrus Adler, Bishop Manning, Dr. Stephen S. Wise and Miss Lillian D. Wald.
Dr. Mendes is now working on a translation of the Bible and of late years has devoted himself to extensive research in Biblical philology. His congregation, Shearith Israel, observed his birthday by presenting last Sunday evening in the synagogue’s auditorium a biblical play, “The Eternal Problem,” which Dr. Mendes wrote 60 years ago.
Dr. Mendes is a past president of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations and the author of numerous books on Jewish history and religion.
