Dr. Albert B. Sabin, a Jewish research scientist, announced yesterday that he is prepared to mass test a live-virus polio vaccine to be taken orally. The Sabin vaccine has already been tested on animals and human volunteers.
Dr. Sabin said that one dose of the oral vaccine would produce immunity against all three major forms of polio. He believes that the vaccine will provide individual immunity and at the same time be a safeguard against epidemics.
Tests of the vaccine will begin next year in the United States and four foreign countries. Dr. Sabine, 50, was born in Poland and came to this country in 1921. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II as a lieutenant colonel. A recognized authority on virus diseases including the common cold, Dr. Sabin is associated with the Children’s Hospital Research Foundation of Cincinnati.
