Dr. Sigmund Salfeld, Rabbi of Mayence, Dies

Dr. Sigmund Salfeld, for 46 years rabbi of the community of Mayence, died at the age of 83.

Rabbi Salfeld was for some years instructor at the Auerbach Orphanage in Berlin. In 1870 he became Rabbi at Dessau, a post which he held until 1880, when he was called to Mayence. In 1912 he was given the title of Professor.

Among Prof. Salfeld’s works are his “History of the Martyrology of the Jews of Nuremberg during the Crusades” which appeared in the “Monumenta Germaniae Historica,” “The Song of Solomon with Jewish Medieval Commentaries,” “Nuremberg in Medieval Times,” “Scenes from the Life of the Jews of Mayence,” etc. After his 80th birthday Prof. Salfeld published a new work on the law of inheritance among the Jews.

Since 1875, Prof. Salfeld was a collaborator on “Meyer Konversations-Lexicon,” and since 1902 on the “Jewish Encyclopaedia.”
