Dr. Silver Gets 1948 Award for “finest Contribution to Essential Jewish Life” in U.S.

Dr. Abba Hillel Silver was tonight named as the recipient of the Phi Epsilon Pi Fraternity’s National Service Award for 1948. The award is presented each year to the Jew who has made “the finest contribution to the essential Jewish life of America.”

Presentation of the award, which is symbolized by an inscribed plaque, was made at the annual convention of the Fraternity at the Carter Hotel here. In accordance with the Fraternity’s tradition, the name of the recipient of the award had been kept secret until the actual presentation was made. Speakers at the banquet included Mayor Thomas A. Burke, of Cleveland.
