The present trace, without a prospect of early peace negotiations, cannot last long, Dr. Abba Hilled Silver, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency prior to his boarding a plane for the United States today. He warned that Israel “cannot remain immobilized indefinitely–at great cost and with resulting tension.”
Dr. Silver, who was here for several weeks in connection with the current session of the Zionist Actions Committee, declared that the people of Israel are capable of “holding their own and of moving forward,” Asserting that he was greatly heartened by what he saw during his visit, the American Zionist leader said: “Israel is strong, life is moving confidently, there is a buoyancy of spirit everywhere.”
Wherever he went in the country, Dr. Silver stated, he was asked by the people about the position of the American Government, and whether the U.S. would extend de jure recognition and a loan to the Jewish state. He stressed that a position American attitude on these issues at this time would he a decisive contribution toward ending the war in Palestine and establishing permanent stability in the Middle East. This would constitute an act of “real statesmanship,” he concluded.
