The fiftieth birthday of Dr. Stephen S. Wise, which was also the thirtieth anniversary of his ministry and the seventeenth of his founding of the Free Synagogue, was celebrated yesterday by member of the Central and Free Synagogues at a meeting which filled Carnegie Hall to the topmost gallery. In the gathering also were members of many other religious faiths.
Among the speakers were Newton D. Baker, former Secretary of War who came from Cleveland especially to deliver the address Dr. Sidney E. Goldstein, in charge of the social service of the two synagogues; Judge Irving Lehman, the Rev. Dr. William Rosenau, the Rev. Dr. Joseph Fort Newton and Dr. Gerson B. Levi.
The American Jewish Congress sent a telegram of greeting to Dr. Wise, and among the many letters of congratulation were some from Robert Lansing, Dr. William Lyon Phelps, Bishop Francis J. McConnell, Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick, Nicholas Murray Butler, Bernard M. Baruch and Israel Zangwill.
