While the Council of the League of Nations was setting into motion the machinery which will end Britain’s mandatory power in Iraq, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, former president of the World Zionist Organization, expressed the hope here last night that Britain’s mandate for Palestine will continue for a long time.
Addressing a meeting of the Palestine Foundation Fund, Dr. Weizmann stated his wish that the Palestine mandate under Britain may continue for at least ten to twenty years, “enabling us, in peace and in calm, to work for Palestine.”
“We can reckon on ten thousand Chalutzim entering Palestine annually for the next four or five years, if we can succeed in continuing our work in Palestine without provocation, without infringement upon our rights, and without Passfield or Chancellor regimes,” the Zionist leader declared.
“Such an increase, together with the natural increase of the Jewish population, will safeguard us against attacks,” he stated.
“In the course of time, we will learn that security does not rest upon British bayonets or upon Jewish police, but upon our own steadfastness.
“The day on which the British soldier can leave Palestine is for me the day on which the Jewish National Home will rest upon a secure foundation,” Dr. Weizmann exclaimed.
