Dr. Stephen S. Wise in an address before the American Committee for the Independence of Armenia last night characterized the Lausanne Treaty as an “abject and humiliating surrender on the part of civilization to Turkey…… What does the open door mean?” he asked. “It means a door that opens outward only, the open door for Sinclair and Doheny and the Rockefellers. The fact that we even consider this treaty means that we are losing our ideals. Are two or three Christian colleges in Asia Minor more important than the Beatitudes? In for one, do not want them to stand at the expense of the honor of the American people, and the honor of the Armenian people.” Other speakers who attacked the treaty were former Ambassador James W. Gerard, who promised to take the discussion of the Treaty to the floor of the Senate, and Dean A.D.F. Hamlin of the Columbia University School of Architecture.
