A draft resolution strongly condemning Israel’s settlement policies and its treatment of Arab workers in the occupied territories was adopted by the Resolutions Committee of the International Labor Organization (ILO) at its annual conference here. The resolution, which was opposed by all Western delegations except Austria, comes up for a vote at the plenary session next week. Observers said there are chances it will be rejected.
The resolution recommended, among other things, that the conference take effective and appropriate measures toward the Israeli occupying authorities, meaning apparently, sanctions against Israel. Western diplomats here stressed that resolutions of this kind not only politicize the ILO but prejudice its normal functions. They noted that the resolution failed to take into account the findings of a committee sent to the region by the Director General that the conditions of the Arab workers in the territories had improved.
