An official Israeli statement today announced that the drainage of the Huleh swamps continued this morning without any disturbances. Six tractors and two dredges were engaged in the operation today.
The decision of the U.N. Security Council to halt the operations has not as yet been received by the Israeli Government. When it is received, the Cabinet will probably convene for a thorough examination and will take appropriate steps. Until then, it is generally agreed in responsible circles that Israel will continue the drainage projects, barring unforeseen circumstances.
The reclamation work north and south of the Bnot Yaakov bridge, where the Jordan River flows out of Lake Huleh, has reached the stage of readiness for the pouring of concrete for a dam which would temporarily prevent the water from entering the river bed. About ten days is required for the deepening of the river bed after which the river would be returned to its normal channel.
