A high official of the Lutheran Church in America advocated yesterday an “intensive effort” to convert the Jews to Christianity. Addressing the 42nd annual meeting of the National Lutheran Council, Dr. H. Conrad Hoyer, executive secretary of the Council’s missions division, said the Lutheran Church has a “special responsibility” to convert the Jews to Christianity since more than 80 percent of American Jews live in cities where Lutheranism is strong.
Dr. Hoyer announced the proposed conversion drive as one of the conclusions of a “theological consultation” the church and Judaism” held last year at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He told the Council meeting that he had discussed the subject of conversion of Jews with “religious leaders” in Israel during a visit there last summer.
