Efforts will be made in 1,200 communities throughout the United States on October 8 to call in a total of $10,000,000 in unpaid pledges to the United Jewish Appeal, Samuel D. Leidesdorf, U.J.A. treasurer for the Greater New York campaign, revealed last night. October 8 has been designated as “C Day” (cash day), he said, adding that the total of unpaid U.J.A. pledges in the New York area is $2,000,000.
At a New York U.J.A. luncheon meeting yesterday at which $265,000 was raised, Louis Broido, chairman of the cash emergency drive who recently returned from Israel, said the “salvation of Israel today is cash.” Mr. Broido added: “We must not let the Joint Distribution Committee down in helping Jews beat emigration deadlines to Israel.” He also reported that Jews now in Israel who had escaped from Russia told him it is “impossible for any Jew to live behind the Iron Curtain,” while “life for any Jew in an Arab country has become unsafe and insecure.”
