The Hospital for Jewish Consumptives at Duarte in the foothills of Southern California, housing 150 patients, is facing a deficit of $75,000, according to an appeal issued by Los Angeles Rabbis for support of the institution.
The sanitorium, which cared for 315 patients last year, is maintained through the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association of California and was founded ten years ago because two Jewish consumptive youths committed suicide when stranded in Los Angeles. This incident aroused the Jewish population and a meeting of workingmen laid the foundation for the institution which now occupies thirty modern buildings on vast grounds. Admission is restricted to penniless patients.
