Due to financial difficulties, the only remaining Dutch Jewish weekly, “Nieuw Israelietisch Weekblad,” (NIW) has applied to The Netherlands Ministry of Culture for an annual subsidy. The Culture Ministry recently undertook subsidizing a certain number of publications which could not make financial ends meet, but whose continued existence was considered important. Over the past few-years, the NIW, whose subscribers number 4000, has been guaranteed a subsidy of 80,000 guilders (about $30,000) annually by the Dutch Ashkenazi Congregation.
