Some 20 Dutch nationals who have committed major war crimes, which will never become superannuated under the statute of limitations, are still at large without ever having been tried, a spokesman of The Netherlands Ministry of Justice has stated. The matter has become topical again in connection with the escape of the multimillionaire Peter Menten and with the trial. In Roermond of Lambertus Loyen, who was discovered by chance, thanks to information from the Hamburg authorities.
Another 208 Dutch nationals have been tried for major war crimes in absentia but have never been found during the past 30 years. Some 17,000 Dutch nationals served with the German SS during World War II mainly in Eastern Europe, though the majority of them may not have committed war crimes in the technical meaning of the term.
