The foreign ministers of three European Community states left here Thursday for Amman, Jordan, on the first leg of a Middle East mission aimed at achieving a diplomatic settlement of the Persian Gulf crisis.
They also will visit Cairo and the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
The delegation is headed by Italian Foreign Minister Gianni de Michelis, who currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the E.C. Council of Ministers. He is accompanied by Gerard Collins and Jacques Poos, the foreign ministers of Ireland and Luxembourg respectively.
Collins is the immediate past chairman of the Council of Ministers, and Poos will succeed de Michelis in that office on Jan. 1, 1991. The three diplomats constitute the so-called “troika,” the E.C. body that guides its Middle East policy.
De Michelis, who met with Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy here Wednesday, said before leaving that Europe would continue to play a constructive role in the Middle East.
He and his colleagues will be meeting in Amman with Prince Hassan, brother of King Hussein who is in the United States.
