Preliminary results in today’s significant municipal elections indicated tonight that the anti-Semitic National Democrats (Endeks) had lost the control of the city that they won by a narrow margin in 1934.
Early returns showed the Endeks badly beaten. A defeat would be take as revealing a weakening of the Endek position throughout the country since the Nationalists had been confident of victory. Final results are expected tomorrow morning.
The election was expected to have a direct influence on the future internal policy of the Polish Government.
The Endeks fought desperately to hold their narrow majority won in 1934. They circularized Jewish voters in Yiddish warning them to abstain from voting.
Groups of Endeks brought into the city were halted by reinforced police details.
