The Arabs of East Jerusalem and of Nablus, the largest West Bank town, are planning a general strike for Friday, the third anniversary of the start of the Six-Day War, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency has learned from Arab sources. The strike call has been made and kindled by Arab radio stations and the Arab underground. There have also been strike rumblings in the West Bank towns of Jenin, Tulkarm and Hebron. June 5 demonstrations the past two years have often been violent. The Israeli authorities have not established a general policy for dealing with such demonstrations, although on a few occasions they have punished Arab shopkeepers for closing their businesses during shopping hours. But Friday, on which the anniversary falls this year, is the Moslem Sabbath, and the closing of their shops cannot be deemed an offense. Security forces have been alerted to possible violence. Demonstrations per se are permitted with permits–applicable to Jews as well as Arabs–and along prescribed routes.
