A 65-year-old East Jerusalem woman who was one of the first Arabs deported for alleged subversive activities after the June, 1967 war was permitted to return home yesterday after she signed a pledge to refrain from subversive political activities. Miss Zleikha Shehabi, president of the Jerusalem Women’s Union, was deported to Jordan. She recently petitioned Defense Minister Gen. Moshe Dayan for permission to return. Her petition was granted, informed sources said, partly on humanitarian grounds. Miss Shehabi has a crippled brother who was transferred from her home to a hospital when she was deported.
The Jerusalem Post reported today that a number of other Arab deportees have expressed a desire to return but have not signed a written promise to refrain from anti-Israel activities. Among them, according to the Post, is Rouhi el-khatib, the former mayor of East Jerusalem.
