Israel. Ambassador Abba Eban called on UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and requested him to use the full measure of the United Nations influence to obtain Jordan’s compliance with the UN ruling on the passing of Israel’s convoy to Mt. Scopus. Jordan has not been permitting the convoy to pass since last week despite the UN ruling.
Mr. Eban drew attention to Jordan’s clear intention to use every opportunity of increasing tension in relations with Israel. Yesterday Jordan demanded that the United Nations replace Col. Byron V. Leary as the UN truce observer in the Jordan-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission and notified Mr. Hammarskjold that it would not cooperate with Col. Leary. The UN Secretary General in his reply to Jordan said that he has complete confidence in Col. Leary and insisted that Jordan should cooperate with him.
