Israel Ambassador Abba Eban said after a meeting with Acting Secretary of State Christian A. Herter today that he would prefer not to comment on the status of Israel’s application for a $75,000,000 Export-Import Bank loan or other pending economic aid. He said he would prefer to wait until June and look back rather than speculate now.
Today the Ambassador held a general discussion of matters of common interest-economic and political. The meeting of the Bagdad Pact Council in Ankara, the “United Arab State” linking Syria and Egypt, and other matters were believed covered. In fact, the Ambassador suggested that all contemporary events in the Middle East affecting Israel were discussed.
Mr. Eban declined to comment on reports that he my leave his ambassadorial post to take a Cabinet assignment in Israel. He was accompanied by Yacov Herzog, Minister of the Embassy, and Meir Sherman, a top Israeli Government economic officer.
