Since Israel was established 25 years ago, thousands of Israelis working abroad have been deprived of the right to vote in Knesset elections. Foreign Minister Abba Eban is trying to obtain voting rights for the absentees who include diplomatic representatives, El Al agents, bankers, and commercial representatives.
Eban has approached Premier Golda Meir. Justice Minister Yaacov Shimshon Shapiro and Labor Party Secretary General Aharon Yadlin on the matter. Shapiro and Yadlin believe there is insufficient time to change the law during the present Knesset session which ends April 10.
