A Foreign Ministry official said today that President Luis Echeverria was prepared to undertake a mediating role in the Arab-Israeli dispute on his forthcoming visit to the Middle East if both sides requested his intervention. Echeverria will visit 14 countries, including Israel and the Arab states.

The Central Jewish Committee of Mexico sent the President a message today wishing him success on his journey. The message stressed that while in Israel, the Mexican leader will have an opportunity to witness how Jewish immigrants from all over the world are working peacefully to build a new nation according to the ideals of Zionism, the Jewish national liberation movement, without harming the interests of neighboring countries or any national groups.

The message was regarded as especially significant in view of the resolution adopted by the International Women’s Conference here a week ago equating Zionism with colonialism and calling for its elimination. The Mexican delegation supported the resolution which encompassed a wide range of other items including global economic reform, Echeverria will be in Israel August 7-10 after visiting Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
