The plans for colonizing Jews in Ecuador are being held up by lack of requisite funds and the recent political upheaval during which a military dictatorship was established in Ecuador, according to an advance report received by the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society from its Paris office and made public today.
“We had a chance to examine a draft of the agreement drawn up for signature between the Government of Ecuador and the Paris committee,” the report said. “Essentially it provides for a colonization scheme requiring millions of dollars for its real-
ization. Of course, since those millions are lacking the proposition cannot be put into effect.
“Since the drafting of the agreement,” the report added, “the president of Ecuador was imprisoned and a military dictatorship established. A couple of refugees whom we were to send there as individuals refused to undertake the journey as a result.”
