FOREIGN SECRETARY ANTHONY EDEN TOLD THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TODAY HE WAS UNAWARE OF ANY REPRESENTATIONS BY THE PALESTINE HIGH COMMISSIONER REGARDING ITALIAN ANTI-BRITISH PROPAGANDA.

THE STATEMENT WAS MADE IN REPLY TO A QUESTION BY R.T. FLETCHER, LABORITE, AND CAPT. EDEN DECLINED TO ANSWER A SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTION ON WHETHER HIS ATTENTION HAD BEEN CALLED TO AN ARTICLE IN AN ITALIAN NEWSPAPER STATING THAT A REVOLT WAS IN PROGRESS IN PALESTINE AND THAT THE BRITISH WERE USING VIOLENT METHODS OF SUPPRESSION, INCLUDING POISON GAS.

ASKED BY ROBERT GIBSON WHETHER ARRESTED ARABS WOULD BE RELEASED FOR THE PURPOSE OF NEGOTIATIONS, WILLIAM G.A. ORMSBY-GORE, COLONIAL SECRETARY, SAID HE COULD NOT UNDERTAKE THE RELEASE OF PERSONS UNDER DETENTION. IN REPLY TO MR. GIBSON’S QUESTION AS TO THE EVIDENCE WHICH CAUSED THE DECISION TO EXILE ARAB LEADERS, MR. ORMSBY-GORE SAID HE HAD NOTHING TO ADD TO THE PALESTINE GOVERNMENT’S STATEMENT OF OCT. 1.
