The Egyptian Government today exempted Jews from measures taken against Italian nationals.
Since Italy’s entrance into the war many of the 5,000 Italian Jews who constituted 10 per cent of the Italian colony in Egypt, had been taken into custody.
Although the Jews were usually released after a day or two, hundreds of them remained without jobs, were not allowed to continue in their trades and all their credits were blocked.
With actual lifting of the restrictions against them, as a result of today’s action, the Italian Jews will be able to resume their former occupations.
The situation of the German Jews is similar. Some well-known doctors from Germany are directing Jewish hospitals in Cairo and Alexandria.
