Egyptian authorities today announced — according to word received here — that they will refuse to furnish water or fresh fruit to the crew of the Danish freighter Inge Toft, at Port Said, unless the captain of the ship agrees in the next 48 hours to permit the confiscation of the vessel’s cargo. The cargo consists of Israeli products which the Inge Toft was carrying from Haifa, through the Suez Canal, to the Far East.
Commenting on the announcement, Israeli circles described the contemplated Egyptian action as “barbaric,” especially because of the hot climate in which the Inge Toft crew finds itself now. They noted that United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s last communication to Cairo, on the Inge Toft issue, has not been answered
The observers are of the belief that, if Egypt carries out its threat against the crew aboard the Inge Toft, the current Suez crisis will reach new dimensions.
