Egypt’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Ahmed Esmat Ebdel Meguid, emerging from a meeting today with Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, said that the Security Council will probably meet this week to discuss Waldheim’s report on his recent Mideast mission. But the envoy said that the exact timing of the meeting will be decided after discussions with members of the African group who are awaiting a Security Council debate on the situation in South Africa, scheduled to begin March 21.
The timing of Egypt’s request for a Council debate on Waldheim’s report has surprised diplomats and observers here. They noted that Egypt’s request came at the time when the Carter Administration is conducting a series of meetings with key Mideast leaders and in a week when Carter is to visit the UN. Carter is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly Thursday night.
Tuvia Saar, spokesman for Israel’s UN Mission, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that Israel will take part in the Council debate when it convenes. U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young, this month’s president of the Security Council, will conduct informal consultations tomorrow with Council members on Egypt’s request.
