Syria and Egypt signed a mutual defense pact today pledging each party to support the other in any conflict with the State of Israel. Dispatches from Damascus reported that the pact provides for a joint military command in peace and war and for foundation of a joint war chest to which Egypt would contribute 65 percent and Syria 35 percent. There would also be a defense council composed of the foreign and defense ministers of the two countries. Syrian officials said that they are now negotiating a similar pact with The Lebanon and would seek the adherence to the pact of King Saudi of Saudi Arabia. Both Syria and Saudi Arabia were reported to be negotiating with Czechoslovakia for the purchase of arms.
