Dispatches received here from Cairo today quoted a statement made in the United Arab Republic Capital by Major Salah Salem, right-hand man of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, saying “Israel would not use the atom bomb, since such use might inflict casualties on Israelis too.”
The Arab press, not only in Cairo but in Beirut and other capitals as well, gave prominence today to the reports alleging that Israel is capable of making an atomic weapon. The pro-Cairo “Al Massa,” at Beirut, called upon the UAR to acquire the atomic bomb from the Soviet Union, claiming that “every moment lost strengthens our enemy.”
Another Beirut newspaper, “Nahar,” expressed the editorial opinion that “there is no reason why France should not supply Israel with the A-bomb, since she supplies other modern weapons to Israel.”
