Egyptian planes were observed today flying over Israeli territory near the Gaza strip. Israel authorities made no effort to intercept them, since no further clashes were reported from the Egyptian-Israel border, in the Gaza area. During yesterday’s clashes four Israeli soldiers were wounded, it was revealed today.
United Nations officials here said they had received information that Major General E. L. M. Burns. UN truce chief, met this morning in Cairo with Egyptian Deputy Foreign. Minister Khairat who assured him that Egypt will man the Gaza frontier with only regular troops from now on.
Use of regulars on the demarcation line is one of Gen. Burns’ proposals for relieving tension. The others are a local commanders’ agreement, joint Israel-Egyptian patrols, and barbed wire on sections of the frontier. At his meeting in Cairo today, Gen. Burns did not discuss an Egyptian proposal for a demilitarized buffer zone along the frontier. The General also met with Col. Salah Gohar, chief of the Palestine Department of the Egyptian War Ministry, according to information received here by UN truce officials.
