The Egyptian regime of Col. Gamal Abdel Nasser celebrated this weekend the third anniversary of the military coup which unseated King Farouk with a parade and threats to invade Israel. The most blatant threat was made by Maj. Gen. Abdel Hakim Amer, Minister of War and commander-in-chief of Egypt’s armed forces, who threatened the invasion if it becomes necessary to “maintain peace by force,” according to dispatches from the Egyptian capital.
Earlier, addressing a huge mass meeting to which Chief Rabbi Haim Nahum and other Egyptian Jewish leaders had been invited, Premier Nasser pledged his armies to defend “the whole Arab world” against “Israel aggression.” He asserted that “Palestine was the most horrible international crime in history.”
He told the 40,000 persons in the audience that Zionism was not alone in responsibility for this “crime”. The Egyptian dictator said: “Israel is the result of imperialist efforts to disrupt Arab unity and prevent Arabs from becoming a single powerful bloc.”
Meanwhile, it was disclosed here today that the British Government turned over to Egypt two destroyers early this month. The destroyers were built at the end of World War II and never saw war action. Two similar destroyers were turned over by the British Navy to Israel about ten days ago.
