Ehud Olmert approved the nomination of Maj. Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi as Israeli army chief of staff. The prime minister gave the green light Monday in a meeting with Defense Minister Amir Peretz, who named Ashkenazi, the ministry’s director-general, to succeed Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz.
