Eighty-two Latvian Holocaust survivors were given checks of $400 from Switzerland’s Holocaust Memorial Fund at a ceremony in the Latvian capital of Riga. The checks represent the first moneys distributed from the nearly $200 million fund, which was created by the Swiss banks earlier this year amid allegations that they benefited from their dealings with the Nazis.
