President Eisenhower today revealed the contents of the United States budget for the fiscal year of 1955 announcing that “with respect to the Near East the budget provides for helping relieve the plight of Arab refugees through contributions to the United Nations Refugee Agency, and for technical assistance and supplementary economic development in the Arab states, Israel, and Iran.”
This definite commitment to technical and economic assistance to Israel was not supplemented in either the President’s message or the budget itself in any way which would indicate the amount of such assistance Israel might expect. The budget is more definite with regard to the Arab refugees and states that additional appropriations will be required for U.S. contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. However, no figures are provided for the Arabs.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Operations Administration announced today authorizations totaling $280,000 for Israel. This sum includes equipment and supplies for a health project costing $200,000.
