Lewis L. Strauss, member of the executive of the American Jewish Committee and other Jewish organizations, has been named by Precedent Eisenhower as chairman of the Attorney Energy Commission, it was reported here today. His nomination is expected to be confirmed by the Senate this week. He is a Rear Admiral in the United States Naval Reserve.
Admiral Strauss served as a member of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1946, when it was established, till 1950 when he returned to private business as a financial adviser. He is credited officially with pressing the development of the detection system that informed the United States that the Soviet Union had exploded its own bomb in 1949. Born in Charleston, W. Va., he became, at the age of 21, private secretary to Herbert Hoover who then headed the U. S. Food Administration in Europe. He is a member of the Temple Emanuel in New York.
