The United States Government maintains neutrality in the Arab-Israel conflict and will continue to watch the problem, President Eisenhower told a press conference today. The President said he did not know what particular thing inspired yesterday’s attack by Saudi Arabia on the United States at the United Nations.
He emphasized that the U.S. has tried its best to be friends with every nation in the Middle East and, of course, knows that the Arabs blame most of their troubles on the Israeli threat, as they call it. The U.S., nevertheless, has tried constantly to be neutral as between that quarrel, trying to make itself friends of both sides so it could be useful in promoting peaceful conditions there, he stressed.
