President Eisenhower said today that all civilized people must deplore such incidents as the bomb attack on the Israel Cabinet yesterday. He volunteered his statement at the outset of his press conference before opening the meeting to questions from correspondents. Additional security measures were in evidence at the press conference but it could not be ascertained if these were due to yesterday’s event.
“I should like first this morning to comment on the bombing of the Israeli Cabinet,” Mr. Eisenhower told the correspondents. “I am sure that all civilized people deplore such incidents, and the same people will take some satisfaction in the circumstances that there were no fatalities and, except for Mr. Shapira, no one seriously injured. It is the kind of thing that I think all nations can deplore, regardless of any kind of political antagonisms to the particular country involved.”
A State Department spokesman said today that the United States Government was expressing to the Government of Israel “regret that a number of members of the Israel Government were injured, one of them gravely.” The message was to be transmitted through the American Embassy in Israel.
