Eric Johnston, President Eisenhower’s personal envoy to the Near East whose mission is to work out regional cooperation on development schemes and on solving the Arab refugee problem, conferred today with Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett on the details of the plan for regional development of the Jordan River worked out by the Tennessee Valley Authority at the behest of the State Department.
The meeting at the government center here was recessed until tomorrow to permit Israel’s top water resources experts to join the discussion. Mr. Johnston was accompanied to the meeting by American Embassy officials.
During the meeting, Communists and members of Dr. Moshe Sneh’s “Left Group” demonstrated against the presence of Mr. Johnston in Israel. They carried signs demanding: “Johnston Go Home” and “Keep Our Water Resources Free of American Influence.” The demonstrators dispersed quietly.
