The United Arab Republic’s envoy here conveyed to Secretary-General U Thant remarks attributed to Gen. Moshe Dayan, Israel’s Defense Minister, and commented that they demonstrated Israeli “designs” on occupied territories and “contempt and disregard” of a UN resolution on Mid-East peace.
Alleging that the remarks indicated Israeli expansionism in the Middle East, Ambassador Mohamed Awad el-Kony asked that the letter be circulated as a Security Council document. Among Gen. Dayan’s remarks in question were statements that Israel must retain parts of the Sinai Peninsula and Sharm-El-Sheikh, the latter guarding the approaches to the Straits of Tiran.
