Chief of Staff David Elazar warned again that any attacks on Israeli border settlements will be met with swift, hard retaliation. Speaking at a B’nai B’rith function, Elazar said the settlements and the Army were joined in a combat alliance, since it is the settlements in the north that have been constantly struck by terrorists. Unlike other countries, he noted, in Israel it is the border settlements that protect the big cities, and they in turn must be protected by the Army.
Seven young Jerusalemites returned their Army reserve cards asserting they will refuse to carry out their reserve duties until the government changes its social policies.
