Five new members of the Jewish Community Council of Galata, the major borough of the city of Istanbul, were elected to the nine-member body in last week’s balloting, the first in 18 years, it was announced here today.
The election was made possible by a change in the election laws last year, permitting minority communities to conduct their own affairs. Although only 10 percent of the Jews in the area voted, the campaign was a very lively one. Approximately two-thirds of Istanbul’s 37,000 Jews live in Galata.
