The general Canadian elections, set by outgoing Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker for April 8, will clash with the Jewish calendar, since that date will be the eve of Passover, it was noted here today. The Canadian Jewish Congress was in touch with the Prime Minister’s office about the selection of a date for the elections, prior to the announcement of the date.
Polls will be open from 8 a. m. to 7 p.m. Many Jews will be busy with pre-Seder preparations that day. Furthermore, it was pointed out, observing Jews will not be able to act as poll clerks, canvassers, etc., since the closing time of the polls, and the ballot-counting activities will come after sundown.
