Elections for a new Chief Rabbinate which were scheduled to be held tomorrow, were postponed last night by the Nominating Commission for one week.
The postponement was announced by Rabbi Y. L. Maimon, chairman of the Commission after a lively discussion of the elections in the House Committee in the Knesset, where a majority was emerging in favor of a private member’s bill proposing to defer the voting for one year to enable the enactment of new legislation governing the elections for the Chief Rabbinate Council.
Mapai members of the House Committee who found themselves isolated on the issue, requested a recess, during which they made the announcement on behalf of Rabbi Maimon, delaying the elections for one week. During the week, the Committee is expected to reach an agreement on the year’s postponement.
